Alabama Truck Driving FAQ

I am interested in obtaining a truck driving job here in Alabama. How do I start?

I have my CDL, but I obtained it in another state.  Am I able to drive my tractor trailer in Alabama?
While states have similar tests, you must pass the exam in the state where you wish to work. The exam can be taken at any testing center that is approved by the state of Alabama. You will also be required to prove that you passed the Department of Transportation's physical and will be required to pay a small fee.

How much can I make as a truck driver in the state of Alabama?
Like most industries, the more experience you have, the more you will make. Some trucking companies have salaried positions, but most pay drivers per mile. Truck drivers average 32 cents per mile or more if you have experience.

How much does it cost to renew my CDL in Alabama?
Depending on your class (A, B, or C) you will be required to pay between $23 and $53 to renew your license.

How do I obtain a Hazmat endorsement?

o obtain your Hazmat endorsement (required to drive trucks of any size that are transporting hazardous materials), you must apply for the endorsement with the state of Alabama, pass the Hazmat exam, pass a background and fingerprint check, and pass a DOT physical. The cost for the exam and the background check is approximately $200.

What happens if I lose my CDL?
Don't worry. If your CDL was lost or stolen, simply go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles and get a replacement. You must show proof of identification and pay a fee, of approximately $20.

How can I avoid jack-knifing?
The easiest way is to slow down, especially when it is raining or snowing. If your trailer is empty or very light, be very cautious since you are more likely to jack-knife.

How many hours can I work in a week?
Truck drivers can work a total of seventy hours every 8 days.

After I have my CDL, what endorsements can I obtain?
Once you have your CDL, you can receive HazMat, double-triple trailer, air brake, and tank endorsements. For each of these, you must pass the appropriate exams and pay the required fees, if applicable.

 How old do I have to be to drive a tractor trailer in Alabama?
You must be at least 21 years old to obtain your commercial driver's license in the state of Alabama.
